Draupadi Murmu was born on December 25, 1965, in a small village called Nemada in Odisha, India. She was born into a humble and poverty-stricken family and faced numerous obstacles and hardships throughout her childhood. Despite these challenges, she was determined to break the cycle of poverty and obtain an education.
Murmu’s early education was limited due to the lack of schools in her village. However, she was able to attend primary school in a nearby village and showed an aptitude for academics. Over the next several years, Murmu continued to advance her education, obtaining a Master’s degree in economics and a Ph.D. in commerce. During her doctoral studies, she conducted extensive research on the economic development of tribal communities in Odisha.
In 2000, Murmu was appointed as a lecturer in the commerce department at Sambalpur University. Her teaching and research skills were widely recognized and in 2003, she was appointed as a professor in the same department.
Murmu’s work in education and research did not go unnoticed, and she was soon appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at Sambalpur University. She held this position for five years, during which time she implemented several programs to improve the quality of education and increase student enrollment.
In 2008, Murmu was selected to serve as the Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh. During her tenure, she worked tirelessly to improve the quality of education and research at the university and to increase the enrollment of tribal students.
In 2014, Murmu’s achievements in education and research were recognized, and she was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, a position she held until 2018.
